Are you a 21st century teacher?

Dr. Joan Kang Shin

We live in a rapidly changing world, one that is increasingly interconnected. While this century is an exciting one because of its fast-paced, technology-driven nature, it is also a challenging one. Our students who are young global citizens need to learn values and skills that will enable them to successfully communicate and collaborate across borders and cultures. As English teachers we are building skills for global communication, which includes digital, new media, and visual literacy because communication in English is inextricably linked to these 21st century literacies. This workshop will demonstrate ways to integrate specific 21st century skills to help our young learners succeed in this technology-driven and global century. Hopefully this workshop will inspire every teacher to be a true 21st century teacher.

MEXT has announced plans to increase the English ability of Japanese students, aiming for seventy percent of junior high school graduates to achieve at least A1 level in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) by 2024. A significant step in realizing this is to implement English as a compulsory subject from fifth grade of primary education, and to introduce English education from third grade. The ministry is determined to develop three key areas - global competency, literacy and ability to communicate. So how can this successfully be achieved and how can we, as teachers, prepare for these changes and best cater for the needs of our young learners? In this presentation, the speaker will share practical ideas on how we can foster true 21st century learners who can communicate competently and have a meaningful exchange of ideas in our global society.
